As a former communist (just kidding)... as a former socialist (just kidding)... as a former baptist minister (just kidding)....

As a former visionary, I'm always excited when May Day arrives. I'm not sure why. Nobody gives me gifts. I don't get to take the day off. I'm not graceful enough to dance around a Maypole. I don't celebrate with a bottle of wine. May Day is not the beginning of summer, although it gets hotter every year. ( I point that out as a former environmentalist.) Perhaps my excitement comes from knowing another summer is near and I'll soon be hitting the road with a camcorder, a DSLR, a laptop, and the pile of books I intended to read last year. May Day, in fact, makes me think about travel... highways at midnight, jazz, junk food, plotting novels, blogging in motels while watching C-SPAN. May Day is the daze before the storm of summer, the eruption of dreams to come. Yes, I've finally figured it out. May is a dress rehearsal for June and we hope the play's a hit. —D.P.
